About Mahjong

History

Mahjong is a centuries-old tile-based game that originated in China during the Qing dynasty, gaining widespread popularity in the 19th century. The game is traditionally played by four players, though regional variations exist, and it involves skill, strategy, and a bit of luck. Players aim to build winning hands by drawing and discarding tiles, much like the card game rummy.

Each set of tiles includes three main suits (bamboo, characters, and circles), along with honor tiles (winds and dragons) and bonus tiles (flowers and seasons). The game’s rich symbolism is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, and many believe its patterns and structure represent balance, harmony, and fortune.

By the early 20th century, Mahjong spread to Western countries, particularly the United States, where it became a social pastime among various communities. Over time, different rulesets emerged across Asia and the West, adding to the game's global appeal. Today, Mahjong remains a beloved game worldwide, with online platforms and casual gatherings helping to keep the tradition alive across generations.
